Why a Fitness and Nutrition Blog?

I am a middle-aged father of two and high school librarian. I have pretty severe but well-controlled asthma. Most of my life I have been very physically active (though not athletic- terribly uncoordinated). I studied martial arts, worked construction, rode bikes, hiked, skied, played tennis, etc. About 13 years ago I started on my masters degree while teaching full-time. Then came kids. A lot of my physical activity got cut out. In addition, my job as a librarian involves less movement than my old job as a Spanish teacher. In the classroom I was always on my feet, always moving around the room. As a librarian I do a lot of my work on the computer so I end up sitting a lot.

Less activity + older = fat!

About 2 years ago I topped out at just under 220 pounds (I am 6′1″). I started trying to make use of the expensive family gym membership and managed to lose a few pounds. Then in the summer of 2007 we went to a Doyle family reunion in Florida. When my siblings sent us pictures of us in our bathing suits my wife and I almost wept. We had both always been skinny but the pictures showed that that was no longer the case. So we both re-doubled our efforts.

They say that keeping a journal will help you focus on your goals and get a more realistic picture of your eating and workout habits. I figure a public blog will do that and motivate me through the threat of public embarrassment (not that I have delusions that I will have thousands, or even dozens of readers, but maybe one of my friends will see it occassionally). So I will try to be as honest as I can in my posts.
